Eyes on the Law: Mass Incarceration
Telesa Jones, with LINC’s Eyes on the Law, presented an in-depth report on mass incarceration and the modern prison system. The presentation was shared with LINC staff to mark Juneteenth, and also at a program hosted by the Local Reentry Council. Find the presentation here.
Automated Expunctions Restored via SB 565
Gutted and rewritten this past May, Senate Bill 565 and gains for the expunction process were restored in the version that passed on June 27th. The restored version was signed into law by Governor Cooper on July 8. This was a significant victory in the Second Chance Act.
From the NC Justice Center: “There are currently more than one million backlogged cases for dismissed and not guilty charges, and thousands more people will be eligible for relief under this new law. Having an automated expunction process in our state is important because it allows everyday people to access the expunction relief for which they are eligible, without having to figure out how to navigate the process on their own. This new law removes a significant barrier for many people who want to get back to work, obtain housing, pursue education opportunities, and move on with their lives.”
