Broadening Horizons: Sea Beyond

Sea Beyond is a collaborative initiative with UNCW that offers an immersive summer, after-school, and college preparatory program for young people in our community. This camp is designed to expand opportunities and nurture the curiosity of rising 9th graders. Its objectives are to equip students with the tools and knowledge needed to analyze persistent global issues, assess responses, and develop potential solutions for the challenges their generation will face.

During the summer session, students began their journey at the Ocean Solutions: Societal Issues Camp. They then embarked on tours of North Carolina Central University and the University of Central Florida in Florida. Highlights of their trip included a visit to the Kennedy Space Center, where they had the unique opportunity to speak with an astronaut, and a tour of the Warbird Museum. These experiences allowed students to explore college opportunities and begin to identify their academic interests.

As part of the program, students will use their experiences to create a Design Dialogue, where they will creatively present solutions to the global issues they studied. They will also develop a reflective portfolio to showcase their interests and topics they wish to explore further, and a journey map to help them set and track their educational and career goals.

The program will continue in the fall and spring semesters, including participation in SeaPerch robotics workshops in the spring, providing further opportunities for engagement and learning.

LINC Staff, spearheaded by Riahonn Rose, played a huge role in supporting the students and their families in taking full advantage of this opportunity and has been a core pillar for the success of the program. Michelle Gunn, Frankie Roberts, members of UNCW staff, and student volunteers attended the trip to tour colleges and Florida.
